From 1 July 2019, it is a requirement that tax professionals provide line entry (granular) data for deductions claimed in individual income tax returns lodged via their business management software (BMS).

The Deductions schedule (DDCTNS) is new to Tax Time 2019. This is a mandatory schedule where a deduction is claimed on the main Individual Income Tax Return (IITR) form.

The DDCTNS contains additional fields allowing users to provide more information on deductions that are being claimed by their client. For example, for other work related expenses, there are now additional repeating fields to record individual descriptions and amounts. Details provided should be at an appropriate level, that is “stationery expense $x” rather than specifying individual stationery items.

By 2020 all schedules will be updated to allow tax professionals to include a greater amount of information. They will also be able to retrieve and amend any of the information previously lodged to the ATO via the schedules, no matter what channel or BMS was used.
