The DSP Architecture Reference Group (DARG) meeting was held in Brisbane on 9 April 2024.
Participation is available to those Digital service providers listed as DARG members for the 2024 year.
Key outcomes
Welcome and introduction
The group was welcomed, and members were reminded to declare any conflicts of interest and maintain confidentiality. No objections were raised to the new Charter, which received endorsement from members. Call for a Co-Chair was announced, with members agreeing on the nominated member. The DSP Landscape Report was shared for feedback.
Reflections from the Strategic Working Group
An overview of organisational changes was provided, including the appointment of a new Commissioner of Taxation and an upcoming leadership change in EST.
Members received an overview of the recent Strategic Working Group (SWG) session including the GST Digital Strategy, ATO’s AAI Strategy, and an update on the Improving Small Business Tax Performance initiative.
Delivery insight and future program
Members received an overview of the high-level roadmap, including legislative changes like the introduction of MTAS and completed work on STP BAS enhancements, PREFILL, and PKA. Future work initiatives and technology enhancement projects were noted, pending budget confirmation. An update on the progress of TLS was also provided.
Industry presentation – Value of the Delta
The presentation emphasised ATO’s shift towards automation, prioritising real-time data updates. Key points included the concept of “delta” for data changes, event-driven dataset changes, and security considerations. Proposing the use of the SBR platform for notifications due to its existing authentication framework.
Delta for Digital Service Providers
Discussions focused on DSPs considering a subscription notification channel. Key points included data sharing, reduction of duplicate requests, and strategic digitisation. Member feedback indicated strong interest and support for this real-time service.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) open forum
The ATO is investigating AI use within the DPO service desk answering DSP queries to reduce ticket handling time, improve response consistency and increase staff availability. DSPs preference was for AI as a guide to relevant resources rather than direct answers, and interaction with an AI bot being favoured over large language models.
Peppol update on ISO27001 for Service Providers
An update was provided on the significant growth of the Peppol network. Collaboration with government agencies and suppliers have streamlined change processes. Ongoing discussions with Treasury, along with decisions based on the May budget will shape the network’s direction.
Introduction to Small Business Tax Performance initiative
Members were briefed on an initiative to enhance small business tax performance through a digital-first approach. It involves leveraging existing systems, connecting with related initiatives, and imagining future tax system possibilities.
Workshop on Small Business Tax Performance initiative
Members participated in a workshop focusing on the Small Business Tax Performance Initiative with an aim to generate ideas on enhancing tax performance for small business.
